From Ferguson to Ohio

On Tuesday August 5th 2014 John Crawford III, a young black man, was shot and killed in a Beavercreek, Ohio Walmart by police officers. He was carrying a toy air rifle, which is sold at Walmart. Since then his family has been demanding to see the surveillance tapes from Walmart and the Ohio Student Association has actively been supporting their efforts.
Youth, led by young people of color all over the state, have been moved to action by the recent string of police killings nationwide. After a weekend that saw a vigil in Cleveland, a silent march to the Beavercreek Police Department and an action outside the Ohio Attorney General’s office six minutes of footage was released to the Crawford Family and their lawyers. We are happy that the family was able to see the footage and can move forward with the investigation, our thoughts are with them at this time.
Ultimately we want the police to be held accountable for what happened in that Walmart and the footage to be released to the public. We will continue to take action and build power.
